The Mill

Home since 1788

Pelta is ideally located to benefit from the natural landscape of the River Bela in South Cumbria. The Mill founders positioned their factory to take full advantage of a natural step in the river where a weir still generates energy today.

Across the weir is the historical visitor attraction, Heron Corn Mill, with thousands of visitors every year exploring the water mill and hoping to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife, including kingfishers, dippers and wild brown trout. Pelta provides a source of income to their neighbours by purchasing electricity that the corn mill produces.

Did you know?

The Mill currently operates two paper machines, both 2.65 metres wide, with four creping machines. These machines collectively generate an average paper production of over 34,000 tonnes each year.

Efficient and flexible

Paper production at Pelta

We run two virtually identical paper machines here at Pelta, ensuring minimum downtime in our production process with redundancy built-in. PM1 & 2 typically produce distinct paper types but cross validation of key grades provides both business continuity and production flexibility.

As a non-integrated manufacturer we source pulp from sustainable forest sources worldwide. Flexibility of pulp selection means we can combine several types of fibres in one paper to optimise product performance.

The Mill's ancillary machinery includes crepers and Micrex machines used to add texture to the paper, which in turn, gives enhanced stretch and softness. Slitters and rewinders are employed to produce reels with the exact dimensions required for everything from wide-width rolls for large-scale conversion processes, right down to narrow coils used directly on a packaging line. Both our paper machines are fitted with state of the art visual web inspection systems (WIS). An investment of £400k in 2022 also saw a brand new stock cleaning system integrated into the papermaking process — all part of our ongoing commitment to the industries we serve.
